In 2023, Vietnam and the United States will officially upgrade their bilateral relationship to a new level with the establishment of a “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership”. This is a historic milestone not only in the diplomatic relationship between the two countries, but also opens an era of extensive cooperation in many areas such as economics, trade, investment, science – technology, education and defense.
Becoming a comprehensive strategic partner shows the growing trust between the two governments, reflecting the great potential for cooperation in the context of strong global geopolitical and economic shifts. The United States is currently Vietnam’s second largest trading partner, and Vietnam is the United States’ eighth largest trading partner. With this new relationship, the two sides expect to strengthen cooperation in key areas such as:
- Foreign Direct Investment (FDI): This event has opened the door for a wave of FDI from large US corporations to Vietnam, especially in high-tech industries, clean manufacturing and global supply chains.
- Sustainable Trade: The two sides emphasized their commitment to promoting fair, transparent and sustainable trade, especially in strategic sectors such as semiconductors, renewable energy and high-tech agriculture.
- Technology Transfer: As an emerging manufacturing hub, Vietnam is attracting US investors in the fields of advanced technology and automation, while facilitating technology transfer and developing high-quality human resources.
- Training and legal cooperation: The two countries aim to increase educational exchanges, support small and medium-sized enterprises, and support the building of a more favorable legal environment for businesses on both sides.
